Photography

in Suomenlinna, 2007

Since I started working my internship I've had quite alot of time for my interests and hobbies since I don't have homework taking my time at night. Lately I've been reading on some photography books and playing with photoshop. Still have a lot to learn.

Text to Speech Synthesizer

I just found a really fun Text to speech synthesizer, it works great!
It works with many languages and you can even try UK accent for English.

Includes all major languages (except swedish which is not a major language).

Try your favorite curse words with it!

One of the best toys I've seen in awhile :)

EDIT: Seems you can only try it for a few times, after which you have to sign up for a free trial. I knew it was too good to be true :)
So pick your words well when you try.

Japanese women face an "invicible roof"

Below I posted an article from a respected Finnish news source telling about the problem of Japanese women not being able to go higher in the corporate world.

Of all managers in Japan only 10% are women, the number for USA is 43% and for Germany, Australia the number is 37%

Luckily the new prime minister Abe has promoted companies to hire more women and to give them better chances for advancing.

My own opinions on this matter:
The problems are many, one thing that wasn't mentioned in the article is that Japanese women probably do not want to work after getting a family (not a scientific result, but personal experience from talking to Japanese women who have just started working). Then there is the context of the language. Japanese language dictates a whole way of speaking for women that differs from men. Basically in official situations (like at the workplace) women are expected to be speak in a polite manner. This creates a paradox for the lady leader. Well on the other hand I'm sure there is some way of speaking Japanese for an assertive lady leader (e.g. speak like a mother). これしなさい!いいわね!

The article says that the reason for women not working in Japan is the "Japanese culture where women traditionally take care of the home and children". However this has been the case for all cultures hasn't it. Also in Finland or the USA some decades ago. So the problem is to figure out how to make the change made in Europe and the Americas. How did the situation change here by the way?

Active feminist movement? Perhaps the core of the problem is that a big amount of Japanese women want to get married and stop working after turning 30?

As I believe there are some Finnish readers for this blog, the article is pasted below :)

Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin naisten osuutta työelämässä kahdessatoista maassa.

Japanissa esimerkiksi naisjuristeja on vähän, vain kymmenen prosenttia. Ruotsissa naisia on juristeista lähes puolet.

Japanese study

I also plan to blog in Japanese sometimes, mostly I'll probably just cut and paste what I wrote at a japanese social networking site called mixi. It's pretty fun so if you have a chance try it out!

Some words about my Japanese studies. I am currently aiming for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 2 (JLPT2 日本語能力試験2級), this means some 1000+ Kanji, intermediate level grammar and quite a vocabulary. It is level enough to study at least in some Japanese Universities in Japanese (Waseda at least). If I were to take the exam now I have a feeling I'd pass, but not with a very good grade, so I'm now studying for taking it come Christmas (you can take JLPT during Christmas only).

About my study background:

★I've taken 6 courses on Japanese in my Helsinki University of Technology, good for teaching the basics, but not much help if you want to pass JLPT Level 2, nevertheless these courses are what got me started and gave me the crucial basic knowledge and taught me how to deal with kanji.

★Visits to Japan have proved to be very good for learning Japanese, Japan is one of the few countries left on the face of the planet where the huge majority speaks close to no English.

★Mixi+rikaichan! A fun, great way to learn Japanese. Read your Japanese friends diaries and learn while trying to understand. Of course first you need an account and some friends whose diaries to read. Might just be I've learned most of my Japanese this way. Not a very good way to learn formal Japanese though.

★Rikaichan (see picture below) is a great tool for learning Japanese. I can't stress how much it has helped me to learn Japanese. To put it simply, it's a dictionary. It hovers over Japanese words as you read and translates them (Also works as an English->Japanese translation tool). The downside is that it is an extension for Firefox-browser, so you can't use it in other enviroments. I think it totally beats Electronic Dictionaries (電子辞書) etc. that the Japanese are often carrying around.

★Books, My long time friend has been the Kanji Book series, I recently finished the Intermediate Kanji Book Vol. 1, a feat that took me around 10 months (I usually only studied during my too easy Japanese lectures), it was tough, but boy I can read Japanese much much better now.

A book I got very recently is a one that teaches grammar for the JLPT Level 2: "Kanzen Master" 完全マスター(2級)文法, It's a very good book and I recommend it. (If you are not in Japan, probably you have to buy it online).

That was a bit long...questions welcome if someone is interested to find out more.

Here goes my mixi article:

Japanese stuff

This is a funny (albeit a bit worrying) commercial from a Japanese social networking site mixi (invitation only). It's for some company that helps people lose weight. The translation goes:
"I want to eat, but I want to lose weight"
"I hate self control!"
Obviously she is a perfectly thin and quite a cute model...
I couldn't find it again but I also saw another commercial on the lines of:
"My boyfriend said: Ah if you just were thinner you'd be cute" - this also featured a picture of a cute (thin) Japanese model..

This is how marketers portray women in Japan? And it works too?
Wow...

This was on the blog of a Finnish researcher in Tokyo, but I'll post it here too ;)
Apparently it showed up on her postbox one morning. It's saying:

"Private Detective - Advice
Is your LOVE real?
We help you bring back happy life by revealing the truth"

AND IT'S A CUTE BEAR DETECTIVE. ON THE BACKGROUND A DADDY BEAR IS TAKING A GIRL BEAR TO A LOVE HOTEL!
Oh boy...

So let's end with a more comforting picture:
The elderly in Japan are very healthy (and live the longest in the world)
In fact they are so healthy that they take up SKATEBOARDING even if prescribed walking sticks!!

---->帰国

★タンペレ

暗い。雪。
タンペレマック2度目。

★ヘルシンキ
暗い。雨。
